During the past year the 18-year-old conflict in Afghanistan escalated, especially after the cancellation of US-Taliban peace talks. Ties between Washington and Beijing also worsened as the strategic competition between the two sides intensified and military procurement and weapon development programmes continued apace across the Asia-Pacific region, ensuring that it made international headlines. At the same time the lack of progress in denuclearisation talks between the United States and North Korea, the continued border clashes between India and Pakistan, and China's efforts to displace US influence in the Western Pacific, instead asserting itself as the leading regional power and a major world power, mean that 2020 is shaping up to be another year of uncertainty, heightened tensions, and disputes.
