The continuing development of artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to change the nature of warfare forever, according to the new director of the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Dr Steven Walker.In an interview with Jane's, Walker highlighted AI and "the emergence of increasingly automated or semi-autonomous systems" as a potentially transformative technology for militaries worldwide."More incrementally, it will allow mundane tasks, such as image analysis-type work, to be performed largely by machines," he added, pointing out that this is already happening in the commercial sector to a large degree.
