Myanmar's military (Tatmadaw) has announced a four-month-long unilateral suspension of hostilities across northern and northeastern regions of the country.Announced on 21 December, the ceasefire is expected to remain in force until 30 April 2019, extending through the current winter months and the February-April dry season, which typically sees a marked uptick in military operations.According to the Tatmadaw's statement the ceasefire will cover five regional military commands (RMCs), including the Northern Command in Kachin State, andfour commands in Shan State: the Northeastern Command based on Lashio; the Eastern Command in the state capital of Taunggyi; the East-Central Command at Khoilam; and the Triangle Command, which covers the eastern extremity of Shan State bordering Laos.
