Joko Widodo was confirmed as the winner of Indonesia's presidential election in May, securing a second five-year term in office. For Indonesia's armed forces this electoral verdict points to gradual military modernisation supported by a steadily expanding defence budget. This outlook is something of a continuation under Widodo, whose first spell as president saw stable but unaccelerated development of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (Tentara Nasional Indonesia: TNI), with few major defence contracts despite pressing requirements to replace ageing capabilities in areas such as logistics; patrolling; and command, control, communications, computers, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR).
