The Brazilian Navy is considering the acquisition of up to two additional Tamandare-class multi-mission frigates, the service recently told Janes. An initial four Tamandare-class ships were purchased from the joint venture Aguas Azuis, which was formed by Thyssen-Krupp Marine Systems (TKMS), Embraer Defesa & Seguranca and Atech Negocios em Tecnologias, under a 5 March BRL9.1 billion contract from Brazil's state-owned Naval Projects Management Company (EMGEPRON). Although the exact costs of the two additional ships are unavailable, it is estimated that the procurement would cost the navy about an additional BRL4 billion.
