摘要

Most European air forces are modernising their fighter flights. The need to replace Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcons, Boeing F/A-18 Hornets, and Panavia Tornados that have been in service for nearly 30 years or more is urgent. Air forces now want a modern multirole combat aircraft that can operate in complex aircraft packages, where data and intelligence is being transferred in computing 'clouds', while there may also be a need for deep strike capabilities. At the same time that most NATO countries are being urged to spend more. Russia is no longer the passive opponent it was throughout the 1990s and 2000s after the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact crumbled. When the budgets of most European air forces were cut as part of the 'peace dividend', most concentrated their efforts on close air support and urban operations for righting the long wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
