Engine manufacturer GE Aviation plans to lay off about 2,500 US employees due to the commercial airline slump caused by the coronavirus disease (Covid-19), while CAE is to temporarily reduce numbers in Canada. GE announced the layoffs on 23 March. They amount to about 10% of GE Aviation's US workforce. The GE business has 52,000 employees worldwide, about half of whom are in the United States. GE Aviation also said that about half of its US maintenance, repair, and overhaul employees will face a "temporary lack of work" for 90 days. GE Aviation CEO David Joyce will forgo half of his salary starting on 1 April.
