摘要

EU nations approved their new naval mission, dubbed European Union Naval Force - Mediterranean (EUNAVFOR Med) 'Irini', and immediately held their first force generation conference on 31 March. Officially launched on 1 April, 'Irini' replaces the EU's Operation 'Sophia', which formally ended on 20 March. It will focus mainly on enforcing the UN arms embargo against Libya. "It has not been easy: six weeks of complex and difficult negotiations on how this mission should be implemented," EU security and defence policy chief Josep Borrell said during his tele-briefing to reporters after the decision. "But we have agreed on all the technical details."
