After years of hard budget cuts the Guatemalan Air Force (Fuerza Aerea Guatemalteca: FAG) is seeing a restoration of its capabilities, according to its commander, Brigadier General Timo Hernandez Duarte. A major reason for this response is the extent to which drug traffickers can operate with impunity in Guatemalan airspace where no jet interceptors are active, sometimes with sizeable aircraft. Last year, for example, 77 aircraft were detected violating Guatemalan airspace and landing in the country, with a similar amount detected that did not land. Nineteen of the detected aircraft were executive jets, with a cargo capacity of about a tonne and greater speed and range than the small, low- and slow-flying aircraft typically used by drug traffickers.
