摘要

The United States and its allies have maintained an intense level of training in the Gulf in recent weeks, despite the Covid-19 pandemic. The largest exercise in April appears to have been carried out by the US Marine Corps' 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), which is embarked on the Bataan Amphibious Ready Group, and involved amphibious assaults and raids on the uninhabited Saudi islands of Karan and Kurayn on 20-22 April. While the 26th MEU described the exercise as routine training to sustain its combat capabilities, the most obvious targets for such operations are Abu Musa and the two Tunb islands that are claimed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) but controlled by Iran, giving it the ability to dominate the Gulf side of the Strait of Hormuz.
