The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) are deployed across multiple NATO commitments in Europe and the Middle East, along with UN missions and bilateral or multilateral regional operations in the Caribbean, the Pacific, and elsewhere. Examples include the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) CF-188 Hornet fighter detachments in Iceland and Romania for NATO air policing duties; the leading of a multinational battlegroup in Latvia; Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) frigate and RCAF maritime patrol aircraft (MPA) deployments in the Black Sea, the Mediterranean, northern Asia, and northern Europe; and regular participation in major land, maritime, air, and special forces exercises across Europe. Other missions include a helicopter detachment with the UN in Mali, a training mission in Ukraine, and participation in the coalition fighting the Islamic State.
