The Australian government announced on 3 July that it was committed to procuring a second regiment of self-propelled howitzers (SPHs) and supporting vehicles for the Australian Army as part of the 2020 Force Structure Plan. The platforms, which will be acquired under a second phase of the Land 8116 Protected Mobile Fires project, will be built and maintained in Gee-long, Victoria, said Minister for Defence Linda Reynolds, pointing out that the measure will double the number of platforms being delivered under the project and provide the Australian Defence Force (ADF) with a "critical artillery capability". According to the minister, the announcement builds on the 30 SPHs that Canberra committed to acquiring in May 2019 as part of the first phase of Land 8116. Both phases of the project will include the acquisition of supporting armoured ammunition resupply vehicles, which will also be built in Geelong.
