Amid heightened military tensions with China, India's Ministry of Defence (MoD) is expediting the INR56.5 billion (USD757 million) infrastructure upgrade of the country's sole tri-service command, which is headquartered on the Andaman and Nicobar islands in the Bay of Bengal, to expand the number of assets and personnel deployed there. Official sources told Janes on 5 July that New Delhi intends imminently to base additional military personnel and assets such as warships, combat and surveillance aircraft, helicopters, and missile batteries on the 572-island archipelago to counter what they referred to as "China's expansionist designs" in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
