A combined arms battalion from the US Army's 1st Cavalry Division is deploying to Europe for an emergency deployment readiness exercise from 14 July until 22 August as part of the scaled-down 'Defender-Europe-20' manoeuvres, US Army Europe announced in a press release on 10 July. About 550 troops from the division's 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Hood, Texas, will participate in the exercise, commanded by the 1st Cavalry Division (Forward) HQ in Poznan, Poland. After arriving at Poznan airport on 16 July the 550 troops were to have drawn and fielded Army Prepositioned Stock (APS) at the Drawsko Pomorskie training area. This equipment includes 55 Abrams tanks and Bradley Fighting Vehicles already drawn from APS in Germany and Belgium before being moved to the Bergen-Hohne training area in Germany in February and then to Drawsko Pomorskie by military and civilian transport. As part of its training the combined arms battalion was to install the Trophy active protection system on Abrams tanks. The exercise will end with a company-level combined live-fire exercise together with troops from Poland's 17th and 12th Mechanised Brigades.
