Amid mounting speculation that US defence spending could decline after years of growth, Lockheed Martin is preparing for potential cuts, according to the US company's new leader. The company is developing options for its customers on how best to apply budget reductions to the company's programmes, said James Taiclet, who became Lockheed Martin's president and CEO last month. One possible approach is to extend the lives of existing platforms instead of buying new ones. Although many Republican lawmakers favour continued increases in defence spending, swelling government debt and a possible loss in the November presidential election could shift momentum toward defence cuts.
