NATO has "no plans" to create an official consultative forum with China similar to that it has with Russia, although the idea is floating within a NATO-appointed experts group to strengthen the alliance's future political role and strategy, according to sources close to the group.Policy specialists and former allied officials have insisted that such a forum is necessary to forge a more unified approach to China among the allies and their partner countries."We need a direct dialogue via a NATO-China Council. Beijing presents a full-spectrum challenge that we have not seen since the USSR but we don't have a comprehensive Western strategy to deal with it," said Ian Brzezinski, senior fellow at the Atlantic Council and former head of policy for Europe and NATO at the US Department of Defense.
