The Australian government has joined the United States in formally rejecting any territorial and maritime claims made by China in the South China Sea (SCS) that are "inconsistent" with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).In a 23 July letter Australia's permanent mission to the United Nations said that, in particular, Canberra rejects maritime claims that do not adhere to UNCLOS rules on baselines, maritime zones, and classification of features."Australia rejects China's claim to 'historic rights' or 'maritime rights and interests' as established in the long course of historical practice' in the South China Sea," stated the letter, pointing to a July 2016 ruling by the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague - a tribunal under UNCLOS - declaring that Beijing's claims to 'historic rights' within most of the SCS have no legal basis.
