South Korea will develop a counter-rocket, artillery and mortar (C-RAM) system amid persisting threats from North Korea's long-range artillery, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) in Seoul confirmed in its latest Defense Mid-Term Plan, which covers the period from 2021 to 2025. In the document, which was released on 10 August, the ministry said that development of the system will begin within the next five years and will be used to defend the Seoul Metropolitan Area, as well as key government and military facilities and infrastructure. The indigenous C-RAM system is expected to enter service in the late 2020s or early 2030s, reported the Yonhap News Agency, which revealed Seoul's intention to acquire such a system in October 2017.
