British Army Thales Watch-keeper tactical unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have begun flying missions from Lydd Airport in Kent, supported by land-based Giraffe AMB surveillance radars, as part of growing UK military involvement in the effort to intercept migrants attempting to cross the English Channel in inflatable boats. On 2 September the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) tweeted that Watchkeepers of 47 Regiment, Royal Artillery, had carried out their first reconnaissance sortie over the Channel in support of the country's civilian Border Force. Later that same day the British Army posted images on Twitter of a Giraffe AMB radar in Kent.
