Japanese Defence Minister Taro Kono announced on 1 September that the Ministry of Defense (MoD) i n Tokyo will award Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) a contract as early as October to oversee the F-X next-generation fighter aircraft project for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. Kono said MHI was the only firm to take part in the bidding process aimed at selecting a prime contractor for the F-X project. The deadline to submit bids expired on 31 August. MHI will manufacture the aircraft's fuselage and integrate it with the overall system.
