The budget for Sweden's military is set to increase under the government's Total Defence 2021-25 proposals, which were approved by the Riksdag on 15 December 2020. The proposals will see defence expenditure rise from SEK66.1 billion (USD7.9 billion) this year to SEK88.7 billion in 2025. A further SEK13 billion will be allocated from 2024 to 2030. Under these reforms the Swedish Armed Forces will undertake a modernisation programme that is aimed to be completed by 2030. The Swedish Army will get a third mechanised brigade and will be reinforced with indirect fire-support capabilities from two divisional artillery battalions. The island of Gotland will be strengthened with air-defence systems and a new motorised brigade will be established to defend Stockholm.
