The US military has sent an amphibious ready group (ARG) to Somalia to support the withdrawal of its personnel from the country. The deployment is part of Operation 'Octave Quartz' to reposition forces currently deployed in Somalia by early 2021 as ordered by President Donald Trump. US Africa Command (AFRICOM) announced on 19 December 2020 that it had set up Joint Task Force Quartz (JFT-Quartz) under Major General Dagvin Anderson, the commander of Special Operations Command - Africa, to carry out the mission.
