Russian Navy carrier-capable MiG-29K fighters have been deployed to Novaya Zemlya for the first time to sustain a quick-reaction alert (QRA) detachment on the Arctic archipelago. The deployment of the fighters of the 100th Naval Aviation Regiment from Severomorsk-3 airbase to Rogachevo airfield on the Kola Peninsula was announced by the Russian Northern Fleet on the Russian Ministry of Defence website on 12 March. They replaced a contingent of MiG-31BM fighters of the 98th Separate Mixed Aviation Regiment, which deployed to the airfield in January to set up the QRA detachment. These fighters are based at Monchegorsk airbase on the Kola Peninsula.
