Satellite imagery shows that a new runway is being constructed on the Yemeni island of Mayyun, which is strategically located in the Bab al-Mandab strait. An attempt to build a runway on the island began in mid-2016, after Yemeni forces backed by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) captured the adjacent coastline from the Houthi rebels. The challenging engineering project involved levelling a ridge of volcanic rock to accommodate a 3.2-km runway, with barges and landing craft being used to transfer the equipment and materials from ships due to the island's limited docking facilities. Ship-tracking data showed the vessels involved were operated by UAE companies.
