China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has criticised the remarks that were jointly issued by US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshi-hide Suga on 16 April on Taiwan and the disputed Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands. In a statement the two leaders said they "underscore the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and encourage the peaceful resolution of cross-Strait issues", with Japanese public broadcaster NHK noting that this marked the first time the leaders of two countries jointly referred to Taiwan in more than five decades.
