The Indian Army (IA) showcased its 'drone' swarm capabilities for the first time on 15 January by successfully using 75 indigenously designed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to conduct artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled 'attacks' on simulated enemy positions as well as close support missions. Displayed at the annual Army Day parade at the Delhi cantonment, these UAVs, which featured different mission payloads, destroyed simulated tanks, fuel depots, terrorist hideouts, and radar positions, among other targets. IA officials at the parade claimed that similar UAVs could hit targets 50 km inside enemy territory, adding that the army plans to imminently increase the number of such platforms in service to 1,000. Some of the UAVs were used to para-drop medical and other supplies at the parade, thereby showcasing their capability to support troops deployed in harsh terrain.
