The Jordanian Armed Forces (JAF) have revealed more details about their Rapid Intervention Battalions (RIBs), including the locations of their bases, in a video released on 12 January. The battalions were originally stood up with British assistance to create a quick-reaction force. A brigade was formed after a third battalion was created in 2017 and this was renamed the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nayhan Rapid Intervention Brigade in November 2018 in recognition of the support the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has provided to the JAF. A comparison of the video footage of the base of the 91st RIB with satellite imagery shows it is located close to the city of Al-Zarqa. Although an old base, it has undergone extensive development since 2015, with a range, helicopter pads, vehicle storage sheds, and accommodation blocks added. This may also be home to the brigade headquarters, as this is where its commander, Colonel Rad Doura, was interviewed for the video. He said the battalions were formed in response to the increased instability in the region and emergence of extremist militias and terrorist groups. They are self-sufficient, so can deploy and operate independently, as well as alongside other JAF units.
