Fincantieri company Vard Marine has been contracted by Chile's state-owned shipbuilder ASMAR to design a new class of amphibious and military transport vessel for the Chilean Navy.The new multirole vessels will be built at ASMAR's shipyard in Talcahuano under the Escotillon Ⅳ programme. Four ships are planned and will be tasked with roles such as logistic support, search and rescue, sealift, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. The ships will be capable of operating throughout the Pacific and Southern oceans.According to Vard Marine, the new Vard 7411 design will be based on its existing Vard Series 7 portfolio but will be tailored to the specific requirements of the Chilean Navy. One feature will be integrated well-dock systems enabling it to carry and deploy containerised cargo, vehicles, landing craft, helicopters, and rescue boats.
