The governments of South Korea and Germany-have agreed to deepen bilateral defence and security ties to become (key co-operation partners' in the Indo-Pacific region, South Korea's Ministry of National Defense (MND) stated on 26 May.The announcement was made during a meeting held in Seoul between South Korean Defence Minister Suh Wook and his German counterpart, Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, who became the first German defence minister to visit South Korea since 2007. Kramp-Karrenbauer was quoted by the MND as saying that her trip to the region was primarily aimed at strengthening co-operation with the Indo-Pacific countries following the German government's announcement in September 2020 of its Indo-Pacific policy guidelines.Suh said the two countries could be "best partners working together on common interests in the Indo-Pacific region".
