Japanese Defence Minister Nobuo Kishi announced on 16 July that Tokyo has decided to operate Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning Ⅱ Joint Strike Fighters from the Japan Air Self-Defense Force's (JASDF's) Nyutabaru Air Base on Kyushu Island. Kishi said that the Ministry of Defense (MoD) in Tokyo plans to start operating an initial six F-35Bs from the base from fiscal year (FY) 2024/25 and four additional ones the following year. A JASDF spokesperson told Janes on 16 July that the service expects to eventually operate one squadron - consisting of about 20 F-35Bs - from Nyutabaru. The air base is located in Miyazaki Prefecture, which is relatively close to the southwestern Ryukyu (also known as Nansei) Islands. These include the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands, which are controlled by Japan but also claimed by China and Taiwan.
