The United Kingdom fielded the world's first ever operational early warning radar network - Chain Home - more than 80 years ago. Soon after it became operational in the late 1930s it played a critical role in the defeat of the Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain and since then the Royal Air Force (RAF) has recognised the critical strategic and operational importance of maintaining situational awareness in the air domain. Technology has moved on since the 1940s when the network comprised ground-based radars that relied on cathode ray tube technology and several dozen sites with separate transmitter and receiver masts. Today the RAF is investing a new airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) system that is built around an active electronically scanned-array (AESA) radar; the new Wedgetail AEW1 system will be the first RAF AEW&C platform to employ this technology. Although the new AESA radar will provide a dramatic "leap in capability for the service, the cost of the programme came under scrutiny in the UK's Integrated Security, Defence and Foreign Policy Review, which resulted in a cut in the number of Wedgetail aircraft being purchased from five to three.
