Satellite imagery captured on 12 July shows the Chinese Type 003 aircraft carrier (CV) being constructed in a dry dock at Jiangnan Changxingdao shipyard near Shanghai. As it stands the island has been fitted, while work on the carrier's internal systems is under way. Two large holes in the deck remain, likely to facilitate work on internal components such as the powerplants. Meanwhile, the arresting gear is yet to be installed. The Type 003 will be the People's Liberation Army Navy's (PLAN's) first catapult-assisted take-off but arrested recovery (CATOBAR) aircraft carrier and will be equipped with three electromagnetic catapults for launching aircraft. Diverging from the 'ski-jump'- ramp-assisted short take-off but arrested recovery (STOBAR) method employed by the PLAN's first two carriers, Liaoning (CV 16) and Shandong (CV 17), the Type 003 will be able to launch heavier aircraft, as well as those already in service, such as J-15 multirole fighters, at heavier take-off weights. This will enable larger fuel or weapon loads to be carried.
