A comprehensive ceasefire agreement to end fighting between Israel and Hamas militants in Gaza was announced on 17 July, although this was almost immediately denied by Israel and Hamas, illustrating the difficulty of rinding a negotiated solution. The abortive ceasefire announcement came after nine days of Israeli airstrikes in the Gaza Strip in response to heavy militant rocket fire into Israeli territory, and followed two incidents that highlighted the risk of the crisis taking on a regional aspect. First, on 13 July, Egypt's Ministry of the Interior said that eight people had been killed by militant rocket fire in North Sinai. Then, later the same day, an Israeli military spokesperson said two rockets fired from Lebanon had landed in the Nahariya area of Israel; further rocket fire from Lebanon was also reported over 12-14 July.
