Under this scenario, Erdogan would succeed in promulgating a new constitution and replacing the current parliamentary system with a presidential one. However, Gill would then defy expectations and not only stand as a candidate but defeat Erdogan in the presidential election. There is little doubt that, if the presidential election was to be held immediately, and Gul and Erdogan were both to stand, Erdogan would win, although the campaign - and its concomitant mud-slinging - could damage the reputations of both.
