The conviction of Aldo Bare in March was something of a watershed for Albanian counter-crime operations. Over his 14-year career, Bare had become a high-profile figure in Albania and surrounding countries but had repeatedly succeeded in evading arrest. While other criminal groups continue to operate on the same lines as that of Bare, his conviction indicates a gradual shift towards greater efforts to crack down on crime in Albania. The Lushnje gang, also known as Banda e Lushnjes and Aldo Bares gang, was formed in 1997 in the city of Lushnje, in western Albania. Alfred Shkurti, who in 1998 changed his name to Aldo Bare, is recognised as the leader and founder of the notorious gang. He was also referred to as "the professor" or "i madhi" (the great one) by the members of his group. Aldo Bare and his associates have been high-profile criminals since the late 1990s. Albanian police say the group committed murders, sometimes by beheading people; manufactured explosives in its own laboratories; burned down houses; threw grenades at the properties of its rivals and victims; produced and smuggled drugs; threatened and killed police officers and prosecutors.
