The French Army Light Aviation (l'Aviation Legere de l'Armee de Terre: ALAT) has successfully conducted a major live aviation exercise combining real and simulated aircraft, and integrated its specialist command-and-control (C2) system, the Systeme d'Information Terminal de l'ALAT (SIT-ALAT), and the Systeme d'Information Regimentaire (SIR) regimental command system with the Helicopter Mission Trainer (HMT) simulation system from Thales. Exercise 'Aozou' took place late in 2014 although details have only recently been released. The exercise involved the deployment of 30 helicopters, 18 of which were real and 12 virtual, across an area of 200×200 km in eastern France. Gazelle and Puma aircraft from the 1st Combat Helicopter Regiment (Regiment d'Helicopteres de Combat: RHC) at Phalsbourg and the 3rd RHC at Etain took part, with HMT simulators at both air bases providing the virtual element.
