Of all the capabilities that air power brings to the battlefield, few are as important and yet so understated as that of aerial refuelling. While invariably it is the fast jets that grab the headlines, it is the tankers that make their missions possible by serving as the critical force-multiplier without which nations would simply not be able to project their air power. This reliance on tanking to conduct modern air operations is currently being demonstrated over Iraq and Syria in the international fight against the Islamic State, and was shown also during Operation 'Unified Protector' over Libya in2011,during which25% of all the 26,500 sorties flown by coalition aircraft during the eight-month campaign were flown by tankers.
