A number of new and improved mortar systems and ancillaries are in the pipeline for US forces. Speaking at the Defence IQ Future Mortar Systems Conference in London in October, Lieutenant Colonel William McDonough, the US Army's Product Manager for Guided Precision Munitions and Mortar Systems, claimed that the first infantry battalion is due to receive its quota of the revised lightweight M252A1 81 mm mortar in June-July 2014. This will follow formal production verification in January 2014.
