The UK Royal Navy (RN) sees the Type 26 Global Combat Ship (GCS) forming the backbone of its surface combatant force from the mid-2020s onwards. Conceived as a multimission warship designed for joint and multinational operations across the full spectrum of warfare - ranging from high-end combat operations through to maritime security tasks and the delivery of humanitarian and disaster relief - the Type 26 is planned to progressively replace the Type 23 Duke-class frigates from the early part of the next decade.
