On 13 November 2013 aircraft OP-3, the third example of the Russian Mil Mi-38 medium-heavy transport helicopter hauled itself into the air - albeit briefly - for the first time. OP-3 is the first version to be powered by the Russian Klimov TV7-117V engines, the first two having used Pratt & Whitney's XPW127/5. This propulsion split has driven a recent redesignation of the types, with the Pratt & Whitney-powered aircraft now known as Mi-38-1 (izdeliye 260) and the Klimov-engined aircraft becoming the Mi-38-2 (izdeliye 2602), with the firm officially prioritising the domestically powered aircraft from now on.
