US materials and energy infrastructure company NexTech Materials has been awarded a USD 18 million contract by the Office of Naval Research (ONR) to deliver a Future Naval Capability (FNC) project. The project is aimed at the design, development and demonstration of a compact solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) energy system for a 21 inch-diameter Long Duration Unmanned Undersea Vehicle (LDUUV). The LDUUV FNC is intended to mature critical technologies for a notional unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) capable of operating in littoral environments for over 70 days at a time.
