Fifteen years ago Toyota launched its epoch-making Prius hybrid onto a largely unsuspecting motoring world. Despite returning only dieseHevels of fuel efficiency and sparking endless internet debates questioning the 'green' credentials of its batteries, the car tapped into the Zeitgeist and helped popularise hybrid technologies. Today hybrids have carved out a substantial slice of the market, with some searching out ever-greater efficiency, others chasing performance boosts, while a few cynically exploit loopholes in emissions regulations to whisk executives to city offices exempt from congestion charges in hybrid-boosted, V8-powered luxury.
