From mid-2014 the Russian military and hybrid formations operating in Donbas used unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) for reconnaissance and correcting artillery fire. At the start of the conflict, this technology contributed to notable success against Ukrainian forces, according to reports from Ukrainian soldiers involved in the fighting. Russian forces and Donbas separatists used a range of UAVs, including Orlan-10, Grusha, Zastava, Strekoza, Forpost, and Tahion. The systems were mostly used by what appeared to be trained teams, either individually or in co-ordinated actions of two to four UAVs at a time, according to officers from the Ukrainian Ground Forces 201st Electronic Warfare Company.
