The T-80BVM was developed by Omsktransmash as an upgrade to the Russian T-80B and T-80BV main battle tanks (MBTs), and represents the most capable standard of the T-80 series, a position formerly held by the earlier T-80U and T-80UE-1 variants. The T-80 family has been fielded in several Russian armoured formations since the late Cold War, however, the recipients of the T-80BVM modernisation are Russia's 80th Separate Motor-Rifle Brigade (SMB) and the 200th SMB, both of whom specialise in Arctic warfare and are based in Murmansk Oblast. An upgrade contract was signed in 2017 and provided for 62 tanks to be upgraded to the T-80BVM standard. This figure, however, is thought to pertain to two battalions of tanks for one brigade, and the total requirement to equip both brigades is estimated at 124 tanks.
