In line with emerging demand for advanced armed forces to address peer competitors -specifically the struggle for influence between 'Western' countries, Russia, and China- parachute insertion has once again become an area of interest for commanders seeking to rapidly deploy small teams and larger formations into contested arenas. During nearly two decades of campaigns in the Middle East, Africa, and South and Central Asia, NATO countries and their partners have almost exclusively focused on counter-terror and counter-insurgency operations. Such campaigns saw units conducting ground-based mission sets with layers of air support platforms enjoying a permissive battlespace.
