Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has presented a detailed update on its new 13-tonne class Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (1MRH) programme, a replacement for the Russian Mi-17 series medium-lift helicopters in service with the Indian Air Force (IAF) and other military forces. HAL initiated this project in 2017 with internal funding in anticipation of a potential demand for more than 300 medium-lift helicopters for the Indian Armed Forces beginning in 2028. This figure includes 200 for the IAF and 100 for the Indian Army (IA) under its Tactical Battlefield Support Helicopter requirement.
