The UK ministry of Defence (MoD) has given the go-ahead for MBDA UK to develop a new shipborne local area defence system to replace the Royal Navy's (RN's) current GWS 26 Mod 1VL Seawolf point-defence missile system. The demonstration phase for the new Sea Ceptor system - previously known as the Future Local Anti-Air Missile System (Maritime) or FLAADS(M) - also marks a major step forward for the UK's plan to develop and field the Common Anti-air Modular Missile (CAMM) as a next generation, single-tier all-weather air defence effector to meet the needs of all three armed services. Announcing the award of a GBP483 million (USD764 million) Demonstration Phase contract on 30 January, the MoD said that Sea Ceptor would replace Seawolf on the RN's 13 Type 23 frigates from 2016. It will subsequently equip the RN's new Type 26 Global Combat Ship, the first of which is planned to enter service in 2021.
