The US Navy (USN) has conducted the 135th consecutive successful test-flight of the Lockheed Martin Trident II D5 Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM) writes Doug Richardson. Launched from the submerged submarine USS Nevada (SSBN 733) in the Pacific Ocean on 1 March. The missile had been converted to a test configuration using a test missile kit produced by Lockheed Martin. This contains range-safety devices and flight telemetry instrumentation needed to allow the missile to be fired in an unarmed configuration at a US missile range. The launch was conducted as part of Demonstration and Shakedown Operation 22 (DASO-22) to certify Nevada for deployment, following a shipyard overhaul period.
