The US Air Force's (USAF's) Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) conducted a successful first f reejet test onrna dual mode, ramjet/scramjet hypersonic engine in the facility's Aerodynamic and Propulsion Test Unit (APTU) on 9 April.rnThe US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's Falcon Combined Cycle Engine Test (FaCET) article has two operating modes, so could power a flight vehicle through supersonic airspeeds out to hypersonic flight.rnMatthew Bond, the USAF manager for the APTU, said: "The most critical issue in a turbine engine, or a ramjet is making sure you can manage the airflow. Each propulsion mode has different airflow requirements. For example, with a ramjet, even though the vehicle is going Mach 3 or Mach 4, when the air comes in the inlet, it actually gets choked down to subsonic flow."
