In early 2016 the British American Security Information Council (BASIC) published a report that aimed to influence the debate in the United Kingdom over the replacement of submarine hulls that carry the Trident nuclear deterrent. The report asserted that the increasing capabilities of unmanned vehicles (UVs) in the air, on the surface, and underwater; the development of non-acoustic capabilities for under-sea detection; and the inexorable rise in the ability to process vast quantities of data would result in oceans that offered no hiding place for submarines.
